22nd Council meeting to focus on coal-fired generator

On January 22nd, the Council will meet with officials from Southern Montana Electric to discuss plans for the Highwood Generating Station, a 250MW coal-fired circulating fluidized bed power plant proposed near Great Falls. The Southern Montana Electric presentation will begin at 1:00 P.M. at the Big Sandy Museum and is open to the public. Raw water for the power plant will come from the Missouri River through an existing water right owned by the City of Great Falls.

Chat with the Chair….. A Final Note from Chairman Curt McCann

Hello Everyone! I hope your Christmas was merry and wish you a very happy and successful New Year. This will be the last formal commentary from me as the out-going Chairman. I would first of all like to acknowledge the great Coordinator we have. Vicki has been a God-send. We were very fortunate to hire her as our Coordinator. She has brought new vigor and knowledge to our board. She has attended very event we have requested, and the well-rounded perspective she presents at these events is envied by other boards and organizations.

Council Responds to Corps’ Plans for the Fort Peck Dam

Where the heck is the shore anyway?Another record low for the Fort Peck Reservoir is unacceptable—that was the message in the Council’s response to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ draft Annual Operating Plan for the Missouri River Mainstem System.

Opening Dialogue in the Reservoir Reach

With support from MACD and MRCDC, the Garfield County Conservation District met with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff on December 6th to discuss management of the CMR National Wildlife Refuge. The 1.1 million acre Refuge surrounds the Missouri River, including the Fort Peck Reservoir, from the Fort Peck Dam upstream through McCone, Valley, Garfield, Phillips, and Petroleum counties, into Fergus and Blaine Counties.

Schedule Of Events - January 2007

In addition to the coal-fired generator presentation, the Council’s next meeting will include a presentation on the “Anglers Against Weeds” program by Robert Wiltshire of the Federation of Fly Fishers. Since 1999, Anglers Against Weeds has been educating anglers and outdoor enthusiasts about invasive species and recruiting organizations to “adopt” stream areas for weed control.
