Letter of Support for the City of Fort Benton’s Reclamation Efforts

In March, the Council issued a letter of support for the City of Fort Benton’s application for a DNRC Reclamation and Development Grant to fund the investigation and reclamation of a parcel of property along the Missouri River. The project fits well with the Council’s goal to “Enhance Community Involvement in River Stewardship”.

RE: Fort Benton Public Parcel Reclamation

Dear Mayor Morris:

The Missouri River Conservation Districts Council, a collaboration of the 15 Conservation Districts along the Missouri River in Montana, supports the City of Fort Benton’s request for DNRC Reclamation and Development Grants Program funds for the Fort Benton Public Parcel Reclamation project. The project could serve as an appropriate tie to the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument, highlighting the Missouri River as it is today, as well as offering a historical perspective of the Fort Benton area and its ties to agriculture, commerce, and recreation.

As our Montana landscape continues to change from the pressures of growth, development, changing climate conditions, and varying economics, it is more important than ever that the general public experience first-hand our incredible natural resources. Walking trails that put people in direct contact with rivers, riparian areas, and wetlands are one of the best ways to garner a greater appreciation and respect for our natural resources. The Fort Benton Public Parcel Reclamation project is a perfect opportunity to showcase our mighty Missouri River. With access to other stretches of the river, either through Fort Benton’s existing trail system or through the opportunities in the Monument, the positive impact of this project will be magnified. Additionally, the opportunity to reclaim an abandoned landfill and potential hazardous waste dump along the river is a benefit to all water users, especially those in the immediate area and downstream from the project.

If you have questions regarding this Council’s support for the Fort Benton Public Parcel Reclamation project, please contact our office by email or by telephone at (406) 468-0056. Good luck on the project and please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Sincerely,

Vicki Marquis
Coordinator
