Eco-Challenge Brings the Big Bucks By the “River Runners”

A big vision and lots of hard work are beginning to pay off big for a group of students at Holy Spirit middle school in Great Falls.  A team of five 7th-graders created an award-winning wetlands project that has earned them both respect and cash. It started over lunch, when the friends volunteered to meet almost everyday to create a plan to repair wetlands in Montana.  And now their efforts have yielded results: in January, the team won $10,000 for their plan to sustain healthy habitats for Montana plants and wildlife.  And just this month, they went on to win $30,000 as a First Place Finisher in the Final Challenge.    Student McKenna Quinn said, "It makes me feel good that I'm making a difference and also because of the money."  And fellow student Delanie Ferguson noted, "It's a great opportunity to help the community and my mom says it'd be a good thing to put on my resume, but I think she looks a little too far ahead."  Not only is their work beefing up their resumes - it's also contributing to their college savings.    Most of their work has been in the classroom: creating a website, drawing up plans, and contacting other schools & legislators, hoping to get more people on board to support wetland repair projects.  They also planted willows on the Missouri River where old car bodies had recently been removed, which had left a void and a need for restored vegetation.  Student Lane Haskell summed up the team's efforts: "Just because you're a kid you can still do really big things."  Congratulations to the Holy Spirit River Runners!  The Council is proud to have helped in their project.  To learn more about the kids’ fabulous project, please visit their website at www.MEEKonline.org.  To learn more about the Scholastic Lexus Eco Challenge and to see how well these kids represent Montana, visit www.scholastic.com/lexus/.
